There is the famed Carnevale or Marte dì Grasso. As much as New Orleans has tried to steal Italy's thunder, nothing can top Fat Tuesday in Venice, especially if you have a taste for culture's more wild side!

Easter is a very special holiday in Italy, one that transcends its already significant religious roots. Of particular note are the grand, convivial meals that always involve some delectable lamb dish! The activity of the summer is the famous Palio of Siena.

Very much in tune with this Tuscan city's medieval spirit, each year this highly anticipated horserace occurs in its massive Piazza del Campo along with a host of other grand festivals.
